Fruit Picking In Australia

In Australia, the fruit picking season peaks during summer, between the months of December and May.

Generally you don’t need any experience, if you pick the right time of year when the crops of full and ready for harvesting you will have no problem finding a job.

The way you get paid varies from farm to farm. Some fruit picking jobs have hourly rates, but many farmers pay you for what you actually do, for example the number of buckets or boxes you fill, therefore the money you earn can also depends on the energy and enthusiasm you put in.

There are many different fruits and vegetables grown in Australia which fall into two fruit picking categories:

  1. Ground fruit
    • Fruit grows on or under the ground. Examples of this type of fruit and vegetables include:
      • Onions
      • Potatoes
      • Cauliflower
      • Cucumber
      • Watermelons
  2. Tree fruit
    • Fruit is picked from the branches of a tree or plant. Examples include:
      • Avocado
      • Apples
      • Bananas
      • Cherries
      • Lemons
      • Mangoes
      • Oranges
      • Pears

Fruit picking is a common job for those on a gap year and back packing around Australia. An easy way of finding work in fruit picking is by checking for job vacancies on backpacker hostel notice boards. In some cases accommodation for fruit picking in Australia may even be provided at the fruit farm itself.

Fruit picking is a great way to earn a bit of extra cash whilst travelling Australia and experience the great outdoors and beauty of Australia.
