New Zealand Visa Health Requirements
In order to be eligible to enter under the working holiday scheme, you must meet certain New Zealand visa health requirements. The requirement that you must be of an acceptable standard of health is in place to ensure that you do not impose excessive costs on the New Zealand health services.
You will be deemed not to meet the New Zealand visa health requirements if there is a relatively high chance of you needing hospitalisation, residential care, costly disability services or costly medication.
This is usually where you are awaiting surgery, or have had or currently have any of the following conditions:
- Blood Disorder
- Cancer
- Heart Disease
- Hepatitis B or C
- HIV Infection (including AIDS)
- Kidney Disease (including dialysis)
- Live Disease
- Mental Health Problems
- Respiratory Problems (that have required hospital treatment)
If the above applies to you, the New Zealand government will require further information to decide if you are of an acceptable standard of health. This could include medical examinations and reports. They decide each case on an individual basis, but if you suffer from a condition that requires a lot of expensive support e.g. dialysis, you are unlikely to meet the New Zealand visa health requirements.
If you have spent a period of time in any country that is not considered to be at low risk of Tuberculosis (TB), or are a resident of such a country, you will be required to have a medical examination and submit chest X-rays. You will also need to have a medical examination and submit chest X-rays if you have had TB or come into close contact with anyone who has had TB. If you currently have TB you will unfortunately be unlikely to meet the New Zealand visa health requirements.
Anyone who applies to stay in New Zealand for 23 months will automatically be required to provide medical certificates to prove that they are an acceptable standard of health.
